Zdenek Zeman appointed for second spell as coach of struggling Pescara

Zdenek Zeman is back at Pescara.

Pescara have confirmed the appointment of Zdenek Zeman for a second spell as coach.

Zeman replaces Massimo Oddo, who was relieved of his duties earlier this week with the club rooted to the bottom of the Serie A table.

The 69-year-old returns to the club he guided into the top flight for the first time in 20 years in 2011-12 season before leaving for Roma, where he lasted only eight months.

"I never regretted leaving five years ago -- nobody would turn Roma down, " he told a news conference on Friday.

"I agreed to come back immediately because I believe in this project, and I owe this club something.

"If Pescara are bottom then it means there are limitations here, but we want to get over these as quickly as we can."

Pescara have not won a league game all season but were awarded three points when Sassuolo were punished for fielding an ineligible player in their game at the end of August.

"I don't want us to be known as the worst team in Europe based on results," Zeman said.

"I am here to work and to make this team entertain the fans. This team is not inferior to Palermo, Crotone and Empoli, but they have got to show that."

During his one season as Pescara coach, Zeman lived up to his reputation for fearless attacking as a side boasting players including Lorenzo Insigne, Ciro Immobile and Marco Verratti scored 90 goals and conceded 55 on their way to the Serie B title.

He said avoiding a return to the second tier "is going to be hard" and added: "We'd need to win more games than Juve need to win to lift the title."

Zeman will be back on the Pescara bench at the Stadio Adriatico for the first time in Sunday's clash with 16th-placed Genoa.

"I know the situation's ugly and the fans aren't happy, but I hope they will help us," he said.
