Simon McMenemy only signed a two-year contract with Indonesia in December.

Indonesia have dismissed Simon McMenemy as national team head coach after four straight defeats at the start of 2022 World Cup qualification.

There have been reports in Jakarta for weeks that the position of the British coach, who came to prominence in Southeast Asia in 2010 at the age of 32 by leading the Philippines to the last four of the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup, was precarious and the axe fell after a meeting of the Indonesia FA (PSSI) on Tuesday.

Indonesian supporter cheering
Over 80,000 fans will flock to Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Thursday to see Indonesia take on Malaysia.

Singapore needed to win against the defending champions to force their way into the top two in Group B of the regional championship yet their three-goal defeat means Thailand finish top of the standings while the Philippines take second after a 0-0 draw with Indonesia.

Thailand, Philippines maintain perfect start in AFF Cup

Philippines' defender Carli de Murga celebrates after scoring a goal
Philippines' defender Carli de Murga was on target in the 3-2 win against East Timor.

Thailand's Korrakot Wiriyaudomsiri scored direct from a corner as the holders beat Indonesia 4-2 in the AFF Suzuki Cup on Saturday, while Sven-Goran Eriksson notched up his second win in a row as Philippines coach.

Korrakot curled in his left-foot effort to cancel out Zulfiandi's long-range opener for Indonesia before delivering a free kick in first half injury time from which Pansa Hemviboon gave the defending champions the lead.
