China is aiming to become a major world power in football in the coming decades.

China's under-20 team could participate in one of Germany's regional fourth divisions, the German FA (DFB) has said.

Only 19 teams have qualified for the regional southwest division of Germany's fourth tier, and to even out the fixture list the DFB has now invited China's U20 team to join the league.

Marcello Lippi upbeat despite China setback against Syria

Marcelo Lippi remained upbeat despite seeing China's World Cup hopes suffer a further setback.

Marcello Lippi sought out the positives despite seeing his China side succumb to a late equaliser against Syria on Tuesday evening that put his team's World Cup hopes in further jeopardy.

China's chances of qualifying for the finals in Russia were already slim, but Ahmed Al Saleh's goal in injury time cost Lippi's team two points after Gao Lin and Wu Xi had scored in the second half of their meeting in Malacca to cancel out Mahmoud Al Mawas' opener.

But with the country's hopes of qualifying for...

With AFC WCQ proving to be a tight and tense affair, Jason Dasey and PJ Roberts look at how the Socceroos can advance.
Japan failed to distance themselves atop Group B as Iraq held the Blue Samurai to a 1-1 draw.

The progress of Japan to the World Cup finals hit a roadblock on Tuesday evening as a second-half goal from Mahdi Kamil earned Iraq a 1-1 draw that leaves Vahid Halilhodzic's side in an ever-tightening battle for an automatic berth at Russia 2018.

Yuya Osako scored eight minutes into the game in Tehran to put the Japanese ahead. But Mahdi's goal for the already-eliminated Iraqis complicates Japan's road to the finals.
