Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo hits back at Manchester City critics

Take an exclusive behind-the-scenes look of Manchester City's clash with Liverpool from inside the tunnel at the Etihad.
This week's Inside City previews the club's Champions League trip to Monaco, Carli Lloyd's arrival and more.
Former England goalkeeper David James says it's quite unfair to heap all the criticism on Claudio Bravo at Man City.

Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo has hit back at criticism over his lack of playing time for Manchester City.

City manager Pep Guardiola is reportedly considering a bid for Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen after the club allowed Joe Hart to leave for Italian side Torino on loan last summer.

Bravo was drafted to replace Hart in a £17 million move from Barcelona but has struggled in the Premier League and has been benched recently in favour of reserve keeper Willy Caballero.

But Bravo bristled at suggestions that his playing days are over at City and added that the criticism fuels his desire to win.

"I am the first person to take notice when I am not playing well, or when someone scores a goal on me or when I am not playing up to my level," Bravo told reporters on Monday upon arriving in Chile for World Cup qualifying. "But when people start to say that Claudio Bravo is no good, when they start to take bets about when I will be traded, when they start to talk about how we are looking for another goalkeeper or say that the same thing happens in every match, well I have learned how to deal with all that.

"I take all that like a challenge and it makes me want to demonstrate why I have lasted so many years on the national team and why I have been a leader on our team and why we have been the most successful national team in Chile over the past 100 years."

Bravo arrived at City in the summer of 2016 from Guardiola's former club with a great record, including back-to-back La Liga and Copa del Rey doubles with Barca and captaining Chile to successive Copa America triumphs in 2015 and 2016.

But despite a wealth of experience that has seen him earn 110 international caps, Bravo has found it tough in England ever since his debut when he dropped a simple cross to gift Zlatan Ibrahimovic a goal in City's 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Sept. 10.

He had a paltry six clean sheets in 27 appearances before losing his place to understudy Caballero.

City and Liverpool had to settle for a point each in their battle for Champions League qualification after a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium over the weekend.
