La Liga to stream Friday night games on internet free of charge

La Liga president Javier Tebas has not hidden his desire to have Christmas football become a permanent part of the Spanish calendar.
La Liga president Javier Tebas wants to close the financial gap to the Premier League.

La Liga and multimedia communications group MEDIAPRO have announced an agreement to air Friday night games live and free of charge in Spain from now on.

Granada's home game against Real Betis on Friday evening will be aired through La Liga and Gol's Facebook pages.

The league encounter that kicks off at 8:45 p.m. local time at the Nuevo Los Carmenes stadium will be the first to follow this strategy.

A statement from La Liga said: "La Liga and MEDIAPRO are taking a step further in their permanent commitment for innovation and new consumer formats.

"It's a commitment for innovation as part of the strategy of the digital development of La Liga with the aim that every Spanish football supporter can enjoy it."

La Liga president Javier Tebas, who is in his second term, has worked toward making Spain's top two divisions more marketable and attracting more viewers.

Adriana Garcia is a Valencia-based football writer who covers La Liga for ESPN FC.
