Veteran center-back Bobby Boswell has announced his retirement at age 34 after 13 seasons in Major League Soccer.

The 2006 MLS Defender of the Year, Boswell played six and a half years over two stints with D.C. United and another six seasons with the Houston Dynamo, before finishing his career with Atlanta United.

He played in 366 MLS games, the eighth most all-time, sixth among outfield players. His 32,233 minutes rank sixth among all players, and fourth for outfield players.

MLS has suspended D.C. United defender Bobby Boswell and fined Portland Timbers forward Lucas Melano, the disciplinary committee announced.

Boswell has been banned for one match and was issued an undisclosed fine for fouling Houston Dynamo forward Will Bruin in the 28th minute of D.C.'s 0-0 draw against Houston on Saturday.

Bobby Boswell signs contract extension with D.C. United

Bobby Boswell has been a consistent force at the back for D.C. United.

D.C. United has given veteran defender Bobby Boswell a contract extension.

Boswell, 32, was set to become a free agent, but he will prolong his stay in his second stint with D.C., who did not reveal terms of the extension.

The center-back told the Washington Post that his deal is guaranteed for next season with a club option for 2017.

Maurice Edu added to All-Star squad

Philadelphia midfielder Maurice Edu and D.C. United defenders Bobby Boswell and Sean Franklin have joined the MLS All-Star squad as replacements.

They will replace Seattle defender Chad Marshall, and forward Robbie Keane and defender Omar Gonzalez of the Galaxy for Wednesday's MLS All-Star Game against Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich (9:30 p.m. ET/ESPN2).
