Newcastle Jets rush Ivan Necevski back onto bench after Jack Duncan injury

Veteran goalkeeper Ivan Necevski will sit on the Newcastle bench as back-up after being rushed through as an injury replacement for the A-League Grand Final.

The Jets were left in a bind after usual No. 1 gloveman Jack Duncan tore his quadriceps in last weekend's semifinal win over Melbourne City.

Glen Moss will start in his place at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night but the club has no other experienced goalkeepers on the books.

Teenager Noah James has been training with the Jets but was ineligible to play because he wasn't registered during the recent National Youth League season, which he missed due to injury.

It prompted them to turn to Necevski, bringing him into the squad after completing the relevant paperwork on Friday morning.

Ivan Necevski
Ivan Necevski has been playing in the NSW NPL for APIA Leichhardt.

Necevski, 38, has been playing in the NSW NPL for APIA Leichhardt but had a train-on deal with the Jets this season and sat on the bench 11 times.

"Glen is the ultimate professional with fantastic experience. He came in and did a job last week and I have no doubt he'll do the same on Saturday," Merrick said.

"We're bitterly disappointed for Jack of course but it's great to be able to bring in Ivan, a guy who was involved with the club for a fair portion of this season.

"He's an excellent character with plenty of runs on the board and will no doubt do an fantastic job in supporting Glen this weekend."
