MLS Power Rankings: Minnesota United moves into the playoff picture as NYCFC hold top spot

1. New York City FC

Record: 12W-4D-4L
Week 20 ranking: 1

No game this weekend for Domenec Torrent and New York City FC.

2. Atlanta United

Record: 13-5-4
Week 20 ranking: 3

Atlanta fell behind early, then grabbed the game and didn't let go in a 3-1 win over D.C. United. Josef Martínez set himself in the Golden Boot race with his MLS-record sixth hat trick this season.

3. New York Red Bulls

Record: 12-2-5
Week 20 ranking: 4

Bradley Wright-Phillips' 99th MLS goal helped the Red Bulls to a 2-0 home win over the Revolution. New York has lost only once at home in 2018, outscoring opponents 25-6 at Red Bull Arena.

Record: 10-5-5
Week 20 ranking: 2

Bob Bradley's decision to rest a few key players might have been the right one long term, but it didn't work out against Minnesota on Sunday night. The 5-1 loss will be quickly forgotten on the way to a showdown with the Galaxy on Thursday night.

5. Portland Timbers

Record: 8-7-3
Week 20 ranking: 5

Not the best defensive performance for the Timbers at home against Montreal, and it took two Evan Bush gaffes to secure a point. The draw did, however, extend Portland's unbeaten streak to 13.

6. FC Dallas

Record: 11-6-3
Week 20 ranking: 6

FC Dallas had its chances on Saturday against Houston but couldn't take advantage in the first battle of the year for El Capitan. Roland Lamah's misses prevented FCD from getting the win.

7. LA Galaxy

Record: 9-4-7
Week 20 ranking: 7

It took a little while, but Sigi Schmid's team is now in a good stride with a run of five games unbeaten. A Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal, his 12th of the year, stole the show for the streaking Galaxy in Philadelphia.

8. Houston Dynamo

Record: 7-6-6
Week 20 ranking: 8

On the one hand, the Dynamo have to be happy with a point against FC Dallas after conceding in the first minute and giving up several good chances. On the other, no draw against Dallas can feel satisfying for Houston.

9. Sporting Kansas City

Record: 9-6-5
Week 20 ranking: 9

No match on the weekend for a Sporting side still licking its wounds from a U.S. Open Cup loss on Wednesday.

10. Columbus Crew SC

Record: 9-6-7
Week 20 ranking: 12

Columbus secured an emotional win and three crucial points in the Eastern Conference playoff race thanks to a late comeback and an absolute rocket of the foot of the usually goal-shy Wil Trapp.

11. Montreal Impact

Record: 9-1-12
Week 20 ranking: 10

Saphir Taider stayed hot in Portland, but the Impact will rue an opportunity lost in 2-2 draw -- remarkably their first tie of the season. Remi Garde will hope Evan Bush doesn't make a habit of his mistakes.

12. New England Revolution

Record: 7-7-7
Week 20 ranking: 11

It was a bad week for New England, which lost in Minnesota and New Jersey over four days. The Revs are now in the throws of a three-game losing streak and in danger of fading out the playoff spots in the East.

13. Minnesota United

Record: 9-1-11
Week 20 ranking: 18

The Loons have themselves a three-game winning streak, with an emphatic 5-1 win over the second-place team in the West on Sunday night the latest in the run. United moved up to seventh place, just two points back of RSL for the last playoff spot.

14. Seattle Sounders FC

Record: 5-5-9
Week 20 ranking: 15

For the first time in months, the Sounders looked comfortable on their way to a 2-0 win over the Whitecaps. Raul Ruidiaz made his debut, but there was some bad news when Victor Rodríguez left the game injured.

15. Real Salt Lake

Record: 9-3-9
Week 20 ranking: 15

No Rocky Mountain Cup match is ever easy and the latest version was no exception. Without Mike Petke on the sideline due to suspension, and dealing with a long weather delay, RSL managed just a point against the Rapids despite holding a two-goal lead before the break.

16. Vancouver Whitecaps

Record: 7-5-9
Week 20 ranking: 14

There wasn't much good about the Caps' performance in Seattle. The lack of Alphonso Davies was conspicuous amid rumors the teenager will soon make a big-money move to Europe.

17. Philadelphia Union

Record: 7-3-10
Week 20 ranking: 16

CJ Sapong's first goal since April was wasted on Saturday when the Union conceded three unanswered goals in a 3-1 home loss to the Galaxy. Philly now faces a tough trip to Houston on Wednesday.

18. Toronto FC

Record: 5-4-11
Week 20 ranking: 21

Sebastian Giovinco showed his quality while Jozy Altidore and Victor Vazquez returned to the field in a massive 2-1 road win for the Reds over Chicago. The win was Toronto's first in its past seven games.

19. Chicago Fire

Record: 6-5-11
Week 20 ranking: 17

No one has lost more games at home this season than the Fire, who suffered their sixth Toyota Park defeat of the year on Saturday. Chicago remains stuck in eighth place in the East.

20. D.C. United

Record: 3-5-8
Week 20 ranking: 19

Wayne Rooney's first start for United gave the DP a look at the challenge of turning his new team into a contender. Rooney came off after a quiet hour in a 3-1 loss.

21. Orlando City

Record: 7-1-12
Week 20 ranking: 20

For a while, it looked as if the Lions were on their way to a big road win against the Crew in Ohio. Then a controversial penalty call and a wonder goal saw a potential win turn into a crushing loss.

22. Colorado Rapids

Record: 4-5-11
Week 20 ranking: 22

A late goal from Dillon Serna helped the Rapids to a 2-2 draw on the road in Utah. It was the first time Colorado scored multiple goals since a June 23 win over Minnesota.

23. San Jose Earthquakes

Record: 2-6-11
Week 20 ranking: 23

One can only imagine what's going on with the chaotic Quakes during a weekend off league action.
