Major League Soccer has announced the eight teams that will participate in the second edition of the Leagues Cup, a competition that pits clubs from MLS against those from Liga MX.

The eight MLS teams will be the Philadelphia Union, Toronto FC, D.C. United, New York Red Bulls, Real Salt Lake, Minnesota United, LA Galaxy, and the Portland Timbers.

These represent the top four clubs from each of the Eastern and Western Conference from last season that did not qualify for the CONCACAF Champions...

Leagues Cup triumph huge for Cruz Azul, but tournament still a work in progress

ESPN FC's Alejandro Moreno says a merger between MLS and Liga MX will not work because of the huge structural differences of the sport in the United States.

LAS VEGAS -- The announced attendance at the inaugural Leagues Cup final between Cruz Azul and Tigres UANL was 20,132, or just over half of Sam Boyd Stadium's 40,000 capacity. The tally was fitting given that half-measures defined the first edition of the tournament.

While word of the creation of the Leagues Cup first leaked out in February, it wasn't until late May that the teams were finalized. The venue for Wednesday's final, which mostly serves as the home for UNLV's college football team, wasn't...

The latest venture between Liga MX and MLS started with four clubs from each league but culminated with two of Mexico's preeminent clubs playing for the tournament's title at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

MEXICO CITY -- Enrique Bonilla isn't known for being brash. The Liga MX president is more comfortable in the day-to-day decision-making of running Mexico's first division than he is in front of the media. But when it comes to the alliance between Liga MX and MLS, Bonilla is direct: he's adamant that the partnership is going to impact club soccer in North America in a major way.

"A huge success for sports in the United States and a huge success for football in Mexico," is Bonilla's take on what's...

2019 Leagues Cup: Emil Cuello (37') Cruz Azul 1-1 LA Galaxy
2019 Leagues Cup: Orbelin Pineda (47') Cruz Azul 2-1 LA Galaxy
Goals from Jose Maduena and Orbelin Pineda made sure that Cruz Azul weren't upset by Emil Cuello's score for the LA Galaxy in the Leagues Cup semifinal.

CARSON, Calif. -- A second half wonder-goal from Orbelin Pineda helped Cruz Azul to a 2-1 win over LA Galaxy to advance to the inaugural Leagues Cup final against Tigres on Sept. 18 in Las Vegas.

Jose Maduena had given Cruz Azul the lead inside five minutes, but Emil Cuello leveled in the 37th minute, before Pineda's winner two minutes after half-time.

Tigres beat Club America in a shootout to advance earlier on Tuesday in Houston, after that match finished in a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
