Uganda's Mathias Kigonya quits Sofapaka

Uganda goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya has parted ways with Kenyan Premier League side, Sofapaka FC, KweséESPN can confirm.

The former Bright Stars custodian has been with Batoto Ba Mungu from June 2016, when he joined the side during some serious financial challenges.

"I can confirm that I have left Sofapaka," he told KweséESPN. "I sat down with club management and we agreed that it was time to part ways.

"I do not want to talk about reasons for terminating my contract," he added. "All I can say is, it was due to personal reasons.

"I am now a free agent and ready to move to another KPL team."

Kigonya was Sofapaka's first-choice keeper since his move to the club in 2016 from Ugandan side, Bright Stars.

He was appointed Sofapaka FC captain in June 2018 when Hillary Echesa retired from football, and scored four league goals during his time with the club, all of which came from the penalty spot.

Kigonya was part of the KPL All-Stars team that traveled to Spain for exhibition matches against Cordoba and Sevilla Atlético in 2017.

He will miss a chance to bag his first and only silverware with Sofapaka when the 2009 Kenyan Premier League champions take on Kariobangi Sharks in the Sportpesa FKF Shield final on Saturday 20th October at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani.
