PSG clash with Montpellier postponed due to security fears in French capital
Paris Saint-Germain's potential Ligue 1 summit clash with Montpellier this Saturday has been postponed because of security fears while protests continue in the French capital.
Montpellier are second in the table going into the midweek fixtures, but the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) have confirmed that they have agreed to postpone the game until a later date after a request from the Paris police.
The 'Gilet Jaune' -- yellow jacket -- protests against a proposed fuel tax rise are ongoing across France and clashes between protesters and police turned violent in the capital over the weekend.
"Following a request from the police," the LFP statement read. "The LFP has postponed the match between PSG and Montpellier.
"The LFP's Commission of Competitions will arrange another date for the match."
Lyon's visit to Toulouse, scheduled for Saturday, has also been postponed.
PSG dropped their first points of the Ligue 1 season in a 2-2 draw away at Bordeaux last Sunday and were facing Wednesday's trip to Strasbourg and the visit of Montpellier before next week's vital Champions League Group C clash at Red Star Belgrade.
News of the Montpellier postponement could present PSG with a better opportunity to progress in Europe, as they will now have extra time to prepare for their trip to Serbia.
Ahead of the Strasbourg clash, PSG coach Thomas Tuchel said that the news changes his plans for the rest of the week.
"Honestly, I do not know if it is a good thing for us or not," he said at Tuesday's prematch news conference. "We must manage the situation, though. Security comes first.
"I do not know if a match against our kids is possible, but it is a good idea."
Ahead of the Strasbourg clash, PSG coach Thomas Tuchel gave an update on superstar Neymar's latest injury -- which would have kept him out of both of this week's Ligue 1 games.
"Neymar's injury is no more serious this time than it was last time," he said. "He will not play in Strasbourg.
"After that, it will be a bit like it was after the most recent international break -- the same thing with a few extra days. I think that Neymar will be back in training around Friday or Saturday."
Neymar and Kylian Mbappe recently shook off knocks to face Liverpool in last week's Champions League clash and the Brazil international scored one of PSG's two goals in a 2-1 win at Parc des Princes.
