Fiorentina yet to decide on Pioli replacement after resignation - sources

Daniel Ciofani's late winner keeps Frosinone's slim survival hopes alive with victory over Fiorentina.

Fiorentina have not made a decision over a new manager following Stefano Pioli's resignation, sources have told ESPN FC.

Following Saturday's 1-0 home loss against second bottom Frosinone, Fiorentina announced they would take 48 hours to assess the club's situation -- leading to speculation Pioli would leave his position.

That has now been confirmed, with assistant Giacomo Murelli taking training -- and sources have confirmed to ESPN FC that no decision has been made over a permanent successor.

"I have always assumed my responsibilities, I have always guaranteed professionalism, respect and maximum commitment in my work," Pioli told ANSA.

"Today, I reluctantly see myself forced to leave, resigning, as my professional and above all human abilities have been questioned."

Pioli, a former Fiorentina defender, took over as manager at Artemio Franchi in 2017, following the departure of Paulo Sousa.

And he received widespread praise after helping a young Fiorentina side overcome the tragic death of former captain Davide Astori in March 2018.

However, after a relatively successful summer transfer window in which they kept hold of highly-rated Federico Chiesa and added goalkeeper Alban Lafont, as well as attackers Kevin Mirallas and Marko Pjaca, expectation was great the club could achieve European qualification.

Fiorentina are in 10th place in a season where all of the teams above them remain in realistic contention for the final Champions League place.

La Viola remain in the Coppa Italia semifinals -- with their 7-1 victory over Roma in the quarterfinals one of their highlights of the campaign -- and face a second leg against Atalanta on April 25, having drawn 3-3 at home in the first meeting.
