Former Portugal boss Paulo Bento named new South Korea coach

South Korea have named Paulo Bento as the new coach of the national team with the former Portugal boss taking over immediately.

The Taeguk Warriors have been looking for a replacement for Shin Tae-yong, who was not given a new contract after the 2018 World Cup in which Korea exited the tournament at the group stage.

Bento, 49, took Portugal to the semifinal of Euro 2012 though was soon on his way after a disappointing group stage exit at the 2014 World Cup. Subsequent spells in Greece, Brazil and...

Qatar investigating Nepali worker's death at 2022 World Cup stadium site

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Qatar says a Nepali worker has died while helping to build a stadium for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the Arab nation.

Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy said in a statement Tuesday the 23-year-old worker died at its Al Wakrah Stadium project site.

It offered no cause of death, though the committee said both Qatari and Nepali authorities were notified. An investigation into the death is underway.

The committee says it "shares its deepest condolences with...

Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic retires from Croatia national team

Mario Manduzkic has confirmed his retirement from the Croatia national team with a letter posted via his Twitter account.

The Juventus striker is second only to Davor Suker in his country's all-time leading goal scorers list with 33 from 89 appearances. This summer, his three goals -- scored in the round of 16, semifinals and final -- helped Croatia reach their first-ever World Cup final, where they were beaten 4-2 by France in Russia.

"Dear fans," he wrote. "I always preferred to do my talking...

Atletico Madrid's Nikola Kalinic explains Croatia World Cup medal snub

Croatia fell short in their first World Cup final, but the FC crew explain what made the Vatreni's run so impressive.
Lautaro Martinez's acrobatic volley, along with a late save from Samir Handanovic, gave Inter a one-goal victory over Atletico Madrid.

New Atletico Madrid forward Nikola Kalinic has said he did not accept a World Cup runners-up medal this summer as he did not feel he contributed anything to Croatia's surprise run to the final.

Kalinic, who was still an AC Milan player at the time, was sent home by national coach Zlatko Dalic after refusing to come on as a substitute during the team's opening game against Nigeria, meaning he then missed the team's run to the final.

"What happened at the World Cup happened," Kalinic said. "The coach...

Mexican TV giant Televisa facing bribery lawsuit in U.S. federal court

Mexican TV giant Televisa is facing a lawsuit filed in U.S. federal court and linked to alleged bribes made to secure FIFA World Cup television rights.

The complaint, filed on Tuesday in federal court in New York, alleges that Televisa used a subsidiary company to pay bribes in order to win the rights to the 2018, 2022, 2026 and 2030 editions of the tournament. The lawsuit also suggested that information about the payments were covered up.
