Portland Thorns, Chicago Red Stars lead NWSL into break

With the exception of one game, the 2019 NWSL season will step aside for an international break after the Chicago Red Stars and Portland Thorns conclude this week's schedule (ESPNEWS, 3 p.m. ET Sunday) in a showdown between teams currently occupying first and second place.

While many of the league's players will stay busy in the interim with the U.S. national team's Victory Tour, Euro 2021 qualifying or the U-23 Nordic Tournament in England, the break is one last pause in the stretch run. By the...

Nigeria World Cup star Chiejine dies at 36

Former Nigeria Super Falcons footballer Ifeanyi Chiejine has died in Lagos at the age of 36.

Sources told ESPN that Chiejine, the youngest member of Nigeria's class of '99, the team which shone by reaching the quarter finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup that year, had been ill for months, but cause of death is as yet unknown.

"This is huge shock. We had no idea that she was sick," NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi said in a statement.

"Ifeanyi was one of the most naturally gifted players to...

Rapinoe: Any talks must start with equal pay

Megan Rapinoe sits down for an exclusive interview with ESPN and discusses the impact Donald Trump's tweets had on the USWNT at the World Cup.

United States women's national team co-captain Megan Rapinoe says players have not closed the door on resolving their equal pay dispute with U.S. Soccer out of court, but any conversations with the federation must begin with women's players receiving equal pay to their male counterparts.

Rapinoe and teammate Christen Press appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" and NBC's "Today" on Thursday, a day after mediation between the U.S. Soccer Federation and the 28 members of the women's team who filed...

Atlanta coach De Boer: Equal pay 'ridiculous'

U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro addressed the World Cup-winning women's national team's call for equal pay amid chants from the crowd in New York.

Atlanta United manager Frank de Boer has said he does not believe in equal pay for men and women in football, or sports such as tennis, because women don't bring in as much revenue, according to a report.

"I think for me, it's ridiculous," De Boer told The Guardian in an article published on Monday when asked about the plans for equal pay. "It's the same like tennis. If there are watching, for the World Cup final, 500 million people or something like that, and 100 million for a women's final,...

U.S. planning bid to host 2027 Women's WC

Two time World Cup winner Mia Hamm joins ESPN at halftime of the USWNT's first Victory Tour game to discuss the legacy of the 2019 champions.
Former USWNT defender Kate Markgraf joins ESPN FC to react to Jill Ellis' decision to step down as U.S. coach after winning her second World Cup.

The United States is making plans to bid for the hosting rights to the 2027 Women's World Cup, U.S. Soccer Federation president Carlos Cordeiro indicated on Monday.

Cordeiro was speaking on a conference call with reporters in which he announced that Kate Markgraf has been named GM of the U.S. women's national team while Earnie Stewart had been promoted from his GM position with the U.S. men to be the USSF sporting director, overseeing all of the technical aspects of the federation.

In outlining...
