Football Association considering changes to FA Cup beginning in 2022

The FA Cup could see changes beginning in 2022.

The disruption to the domestic season caused by Qatar's winter World Cup in 2022 could result in permanent changes to English football, including moving FA Cup games to midweek and scrapping more replays.

Recent seasons have seen the Football Association give up replays from the quarterfinals onward but, with the Premier League eager to move midweek fixtures to weekends, more room needs to be created in the calendar.

This may mean no replays after the third round and it could even see fourth- and...

Arsenal's Rob Holding: I called Diego Costa 'a nutter' during FA Cup final

Shaka Hislop believes a PSG move is still in the cards for Alexis Sanchez despite Arsene Wenger's latest comments.

Arsenal defender Rob Holding says he called Chelsea striker Diego Costa "a nutter" as part of their "mind games" during the FA Cup final, but added that there was mutual respect between the two.

Holding sparred with Costa for much of Arsenal's 2-1 win in May as the 21-year-old formed part of the Gunners' back three at Wembley.

He even tapped his own head at times when talking to the fiery striker in a "you're crazy" gesture, and says that his words to Costa were along the same lines.

Asked what...

Community Shield to implement 'ABBA' penalty shootout format

David Luiz talks about Chelsea's preseason preparations, training in Singapore and much more ahead of the Community Shield.

The new "ABBA" penalty shootout format will be used for Sunday's Community Shield clash between Chelsea and Arsenal, the Football Association has announced.

If the match ends in a draw after 90 minutes, the London rivals will head straight into a shootout to decide the winner and a new system, aimed at being fairer on the team taking the second penalty, will be trialled.

The system is based on the format used in tennis tie-breaks, with the team taking the first kick in each pair of kicks alternating,...

FA charges Wayne Shaw for pie-eating incident in Sutton-Arsenal game

Wayne Shaw ate a pie late on in Sutton's FA Cup meeting with Arsenal.

Former Sutton United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw has been charged with breaching FA rules after he ate a pie on the bench during a match against Arsenal last season.

A bookmaker had offered odds that Shaw, nicknamed the "roly-poly goalie," would eat a pie live on air during the FA Cup fifth-round tie against Arsenal at Sutton's Gander Green Lane stadium in February.

After National League side Sutton had made all three substitutes during the game, the backup keeper ate a pie, which was shown live by the...

Divers to receive immediate punishment with VAR - Howard Webb

Howard Webb says diving players will run the risk of "immediate punishment'' under the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee system.

VAR is to be introduced in Major League Soccer from Aug. 5, as well as from the third round of the upcoming season's FA Cup, ahead of a potential wider implementation which will be decided upon sometime after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Retrospective punishment for diving will already be introduced for 2017-18, but the arrival of VAR will provide the greater...
