Flamengo's Recopa win over Independiente a stepping stone to more glory

Everton Ribeiro of Flamengo lifts the champions trophy of the CONMEBOL Recopa Sudamericana 2020
Flamengo added another trophy to their collection.

Flamengo will soon need to build a new trophy cabinet. In a magical few months since Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus took over, the Rio de Janeiro giants have been accumulating plenty of silverware, and now they can add some more.

The latest is the Recopa, the South American Super Cup, sealed with a 3-0 win (5-2 on aggregate) over Independiente del Valle of Ecuador. A packed crowd in the Maracana stadium went home delirious after witnessing history; this was the first time the club had lifted an international...

Flamengo's new-look defence will determine club's Recopa, Copa Libertadores fates

Copa Libertadores holders Flamengo were held to a 2-2 draw in Quito but are still favourites to claim the Recopa Sudamericana on Wednesday.

It is all square entering the decisive second leg of the Recopa Sudamericana, or South America's Super Cup, the annual challenge between the champions of the Copa Libertadores and the winners of the Copa Sudamericana.

It is, after all, an uneven fight.

River Plate beat Athletico Paranaense to capture the Recopa Sudamericana.

Stoppage time goals from Lucas Pratto and Matias Suarez helped River Plate to a 3-0 win over Athletico Paranaense on Thursday and gave the Argentine club their third South American Recopa triumph.

The Brazilians won the first leg by a solitary goal but goals in the 91st and 94th minutes followed an earlier strike from Ignacio Fernandez and were enough to make it 3-1 on aggregate and secure a trophy decided annually between the winners of South America's two premier club competitions.
