River president laughs off Boca Junior's Copa Libertadores appeal

River Plate president Rodolfo D'Onofrio has said he is struggling to understand Boca Juniors' appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for the Copa Libertadores to be awarded to them.

On Monday, Boca reportedly sent an extended report to CAS providing further evidence about the attack on their team bus by River Plate fans before the Copa Libertadores final second leg in November.

The game was postponed and then played at Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium last month, with River beating Boca 3-1 in extra time to win the trophy.

"I'm surprised," D'Onofrio told La Pagina Millonaria TV. "I don't know what it is that they are looking for.

"Their players already congratulated their River Plate counterparts for winning it on the pitch. I think they are mistaken. What do they want, to win it by default? I really struggle to understand it."

Asked whether there was any possibility that his team could be stripped of the Copa Libertadores, with the title given to Boca, D'Onofrio said: "I don't think there is a chance.

"Can you imagine the people of Boca taking the Libertadores Cup with them? I think we would be laughing for 27,000 years!"

Boca had wanted CONMEBOL to award them victory in the second leg because of November's violence, in which fans and Boca players were injured.

But CONMEBOL turned the request down before moving the game to Madrid for security reasons.

Boca's appeal to postpone the second leg was rejected by CAS on Dec. 8.

However, their appeal to be awarded the trophy is ongoing, with Boca president Daniel Angelici having recently said that it would continue.
