Western United have burst back to form but their 3-0 A-League win over Central Coast has been soured by an injury to mercurial captain Alessandro Diamanti in Geelong.

Besart Berisha scored twice and Mariners defender Kye Rowles put the ball in his own net, as United surged to a 3-0 lead inside 21 minutes on Sunday afternoon at GMHBA Stadium.

United opened the scoring after just six minutes.

Diamanti eased his way past Gianni Stensness and looped a terrific ball towards Berisha, who powered a header...

Melbourne City bolstered their hold on second place in the A-League, with Jamie Maclaren scoring a brace to beat Western United 3-2 in front of 8,577 fans at AAMI Park.

City snatched the lead in the fifth minute courtesy of a Maclaren tap-in, then doubled it through Adrian Luna's 36th-minute volley, before Maclaren made it 3-0 just before the break.

Two United penalties -- scored by Besart Berisha in the 75th minute and Alessandro Diamanti four minutes later -- got the visitors back in the game...

Wellington Phoenix extended their unbeaten A-League streak to seven games with a 3-1 win over Western United in Ballarat.

David Ball scored in the 41st minute, Callum McCowatt doubled the margin in the 55th minute and Ulises Davila rounded out the game in the 80th minute at Mars Stadium on Saturday.

Alessandro Diamanti slotted an 89th-minute consolation penalty as the Phoenix earned redemption for their 1-0 round one loss to United.
