VAR breakdown hits Rennes-Toulouse match amid penalty controversy

The referee of Sunday's Ligue 1 match between Rennes and Toulouse was unable to review a penalty award after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology broke down.

Thomas Leonard pointed to the spot when Toulouse defender Jean-Clair Todibo challenged Rennes forward Mbaye Niang inside the area.

He was surrounded by Toulouse players asking him to review the decision using VAR, which is being deployed in Ligue 1 for the first time this season.

Leonard was unable to do so or receive help from his...

Melbourne Victory announce signing of Ola Toivonen on two-year deal

Melbourne Victory have pulled off another transfer coup, convincing Swedish striker Ola Toivonen to join the A-League champions.

Toivonen has signed a two-year deal with Kevin Muscat's side from French club Toulouse. The 32-year-old will travel to Melbourne in the next fortnight to link up with his new teammates.

"Ola brings proven quality to our attack and he will play a big role in leading our forward line this season," Muscat said.

"He is exactly the kind of player we wanted to recruit, he is...

Melbourne Victory in talks with Sweden World Cup star Ola Toivonen

Melbourne Victory are in talks to sign Swedish World Cup striker Ola Toivonen in what would be another major boost to their title defence.

AAP understands the A-League champions are in discussions with Toivonen about filling the vacant role up front left by the departed Besart Berisha. The 32-year-old has been at French Ligue 1 outfit Toulouse for the past two seasons, but is reportedly on the way out and has previously been linked to Swansea and PSV Eindhoven.

French outlet RMC Sport reports Toivonen's...

Marseille kicked off their Ligue 1 campaign with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Toulouse at the Stade Velodrome on Friday, courtesy a brace from French playmaker Dimitri Payet and a penalty awarded by the video assistant as it made its debut in the French top flight.

The hosts controlled the match from the early stages as Payet, who scored six goals and had 11 assists in the league last season, pulled the strings at the heart of their midfield.

After failing to test Toulouse goalkeeper Baptiste...

John Bostock nails 'Billie Jean' performance in Toulouse initiation

Having signed for Toulouse earlier in the week, John Bostock finally got around to performing his initiation song in front of his new teammates a couple of days later.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace midfielder took to the floor and proceeded to belt out Michael Jackson's classic hit "Billie Jean," complete with his own choreography.

Nailed it, which is incredibly rare when it comes to footballers being forced to sing in front of an audience.

Although perhaps we shouldn't be so surprised...
