Weston McKennie on breakout 2017 from Schalke U19s to U.S. debut

Weston McKennie chats with ESPN about the future of the USMNT, why he's happy he bypassed MLS for the Bundesliga and more.
Teenager Weston McKennie scored a debut goal, but the U.S. had to settle for a draw at Portugal after a goalkeeping howler.

It has been some year for Weston McKennie. In just a couple of months, the United States youngster has catapulted himself from Schalke's under-19 team to the USMNT. One thing, though, has not changed: his attitude.

"I'm still young. I have a lot of time to fix things. It's just how it is," said the 19-year-old when he sat down with ESPN FC in late November. Schalke had just sealed a remarkable turnaround in the prestigious Revierderby at Borussia Dortmund. Going into half-time with a 4-0 deficit,...

Weston McKennie urges more U.S. players to move to Europe

Weston McKennie chats with ESPN about the future of the USMNT, why he's happy he bypassed MLS for the Bundesliga and more.
Taylor Twellman says that watching the World Cup draw without USMNT involvement should be a wake-up call and motivation for U.S. Soccer.

Weston McKennie has urged U.S. talents to follow his example and come to Europe at a young age, telling ESPN FC: "If you have the opportunity to come to Europe, I would say for me ... 100 percent take it!"

McKennie, 19, joined Schalke's youth academy in August 2016, and just over a year later has turned himself into a full Bundesliga player as well as a United States international, scoring on his international debut versus Portugal last month.

Alongside Dortmund's Christian Pulisic, the Schalke...

Schalke expect Leon Goretzka to make a decision on his future in the next couple of weeks, CEO Christian Heidel has told reporters.

With just over six months left on his current deal, the Germany international midfielder has been linked with clubs including Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus.

Earlier this week, reports said Schalke had offered him an annual salary of €12 million including bonuses to remain at the Veltins Arena.

And speaking to reporters on Thursday, Royal Blues CEO Heidel...

Schalke hoping Dortmund comeback will persuade Leon Goretzka to stay

Schalke hope Saturday's 4-4 comeback draw at rivals Borussia Dortmund could help to convince midfielder Leon Goretzka to stay with the club beyond next summer.

Goretzka, returning from injury, came off the bench against Dortmund for United States international Weston McKennie after 34 minutes at the Westfalenstadion.

At that time, Schalke were trailing 4-0, but by full-time the score line was 4-4 after one of the biggest comebacks in Bundesliga history.

Schalke CEO Christian Heidel hopes that the...
