Ex-Man United forward Diego Forlan lands first managerial role with Penarol

Former Manchester United forward Diego Forlan has been named manager of Uruguayan side Club Atletico Penarol, marking his first coaching role.

Forlan, 40, represented United between 2002 and 2004, while his playing career also included spells at Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Villarreal. The former Uruguay international played for Penarol between 2015 and 2016, winning a Primera Division title with the club.

LAFC have signed Uruguay youngster Brian Rodriguez as a Young Designated Player, the club announced on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old joins LAFC after rising through the ranks of Uruguayan club Penarol.

Reports had put Rodriguez's transfer fee at $11.5 million, but a source with knowledge of the deal told ESPN FC that the transfer fee was "closer to $8 million."

LAFC is closing in on the signing of Penarol midfielder Brian Rodriguez, sources have confirmed to ESPN FC.

Reports in South America suggest that Penarol would not let Rodriguez go for less than $11.5 million, though it remains to be seen if the final number will be that high if and when the deal gets finalized.

As a mid-season Young Designated Player acquisition, Rodriguez's cap hit would be $150,000.

Club football in Uruguay struggling against global pressures

Nacional were the last Uruguayan team to win the Copa Libertadores back in 1988.

The Uruguayan Primera Division got underway this weekend with one of its teams missing.

On the eve of the kickoff, El Tanque Sisley pulled out due to not being able to pay their debts. And so the championship proceeds with the awkward, odd number of 15 participating clubs.

The size of the debt in question seems, by the standard of global football, almost laughably puny. El Tanque Sisley allegedly owe some $357,000, but have only been able to raise around $250,000.
