Michael Appleton and Ashley Westwood
Michael Appleton, centre, has signed on with Leicester City.

Michael Appleton has left his job as Oxford boss to take up the assistant managerial role at Leicester, the clubs have announced.

The 41-year-old joined the U's in July 2014, leading them to promotion from League Two in the 2015-16 season as well as two Football League Trophy finals.

Appleton, who has signed a three-year deal at Leicester, will team up with Craig Shakespeare, who was also recently handed a three-year contract after keeping the Foxes in the Premier League.

Oxford chalked up 100 goals for the season in all competitions as they saw off Shrewsbury 2-0 at the Kassam Stadium to finish eighth in League One.

The Shrews avoided the nine-goal defeat that could have sent them down, with Port Vale's draw at Fleetwood meaning it was the Valiants who occupied the final relegation place.

Two goals in a minute early in the game put the U's in charge.

Centre half Curtis Nelson ran through on goal from Rob Hall's backheel to hammer past goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler in...

Millwall slipped to a disappointing 3-0 defeat at home to Oxford but remain in the Sky Bet League One play-off places.

An early Conor McAleny double and Josh Ruffels' second-half header did the damage and lifted the U's to ninth.

Despite early pressure from the hosts, the U's took the lead after five minutes when McAleny fired in from the edge of the box.

The winger, on loan from Everton, then doubled the lead, cutting in from the left and curling into the far corner.

Neither side could muster another...

Port Vale's Sky Bet League One relegation fears increased as they lost 2-0 to Oxford at the Kassam Stadium.

Needing a win to climb out of the bottom four, Vale created few clear chances and were beaten by goals either side of half-time from Josh Ruffels and Chris Maguire.

Midfielder Ruffels punished a mistake by Vale goalkeeper Deniz Mehmet to fire his first league goal of the season high into the net in the 14th minute after Marvin Johnson's left-footed drive had been parried.

Mehmet then turned aside...

Bradford took another step towards the Sky Bet League One play-offs with a nervy 1-0 win over Oxford.

Nicky Law scored the winner in the 59th minute on his first start since February following a lay-off with a knee injury.

The visitors failed to deal with a left-wing cross from Mark Marshall and Law poked the ball into the net when Charlie Wyke's glancing header landed into his path.

The result leaves fourth-placed Bradford six points ahead of seventh-placed Southend, but they had little to spare against...
