The world's biggest football stadium is being built in the Chinese city of Guangzhou at an estimated cost of $1.7 billion, with work having started on Thursday.

Guangzhou Evergrande's eye-catching arena, designed in a lotus flower shape, will boast 100,000 seats and is expected to be completed in 2022, making it bigger than Barcelona's Camp Nou.

Chinese champions Guangzhou Evergrande have sacked winger Yu Hanchou after local traffic police found him guilty of illegally modifying his car's registration plate.

Tampering with a plate, in an attempt to circumvent local traffic regulations, is a criminal offence in China. Police in the southern city said on Wednesday that Yu, who has represented China 59 times, was fined around $700 and will spend 15 days in "administrative detention."

Guangzhou Evergrande clinched an eighth Chinese Super League title in nine seasons as Fabio Cannavaro's side beat Shanghai Shenhua 3-0 on Sunday to reclaim the trophy 12 months after surrendering it to Shanghai SIPG.
