ISL wrap: Erik Paartalu's stunning entry, Chennaiyin's misery and more

Star of the week

Erik Paartalu.

Bengaluru FC have missed the big man in central midfield. Against Chennai, on Sunday, he owned it. He shielded the defence, started attacks, and scored the all-important opening goal after a nervy start that had promised to develop into one of those 'why-is-nothing-going-in' games.

With Dimas Delgado next to him and Raphael Augusto in front of him, there's no better midfield trio in this country.

Flop of the week

Chennaiyin FC.

The ISL Wrap: Shining Subrata, fun Odisha and more

Subrata Pal had a good outing against Bengaluru FC.

Star of the week

Subrata Paul

In a league that celebrates youth, especially Indian, with such fervour (sorry, Mr. Mukhi), Subrata Paul has thrown down a pretty decent challenge on behalf of the old guard. Commanding in the box, marshalling his defence well, comfortable on the ball, and pulling off some superb, trademark, reflex saves, he has been a major reason behind Jamshedpur's early ascendancy.

Amrinder Singh.

That point-blank save off Ogbeche in the last minute of Mumbai's 1-0 win at Kerala. My.

Listen closely; you can hear the thud of 40,000 jaws hitting the floor at the Nehru stadium.

Three days later, he would repeat those heroics against...

ISL 2019-20: Strength, weakness and what to watch for from each team

The 2019-20 season will be the ISL's first as India's top division.
The 2019-20 season will be the ISL's first as India's top division.

Ahead of the 2019-20 ISL season, ESPN looks at the factors that could make the difference for each of the ten teams in the league. We pick out the one player to watch out for in each team, their biggest strength, the one nagging doubt that clouds their expectations from the new season, and what to watch out for from them.

(Note: the teams appear in the order they finished the last season in, starting with the champions.)

Bengaluru FC

Player: Sunil Chhetri

Strength: A midfield for the ages.

Doubt:...

Run, Ashique, run: The Kerala speedster who turned India's premier trickster

If Ashique Kuruniyan's value to the Indian team could be captured in one phase of play, look no further than the first half India played against Thailand at the AFC Asian Cup in January 2019, in Abu Dhabi.

Sunil Chhetri sprinted over to take a throw-in, and as he looked around for support, Ashique, who had started the match in attack in a surprise promotion ahead of Jeje Lalpekhlua, sprinted up to get in line with the central defender marking him. Chhetri released the ball deep into the corner,...
