Draw vs. Hull underlines enormity of John Terry's challenge at Aston Villa

Jarrod Bowen's early second-half strike for Hull City meant it was honours even at Villa Park.

BIRMINGHAM, England -- On the first day of the rest of John Terry's footballing life, as Aston Villa's new captain, he received multiple reminders of how different life in the Championship will be to his 18 years as Chelsea's favourite son.

"The aim is to try and help this club win the Championship," Terry wrote in his first Captain's Column of the season in the matchday programme. A five-time Premier League-winning captain accepts nothing less than total victory, so a 1-1 draw with Hull City...

John Terry leading Aston Villa's veteran revolution in Championship

Steve Nicol suggests Steve Bruce was a key factor in John Terry joining Championship side Aston Villa.
John Terry is initiated with Aston Villa, Jesse Lingard makes some fans' day and more in this edition of the Sweeper.

BIRMINGHAM -- It will take some time to get used to seeing John Terry in a shirt other than Chelsea's, but he is an Aston Villa player now. In dropping down to a Championship club in severe need of rescuing from itself, the five-time Premier League-winning captain has accepted a very different mission.

Once Antonio Conte made clear that Terry had no further part to play at Stamford Bridge, the 36-year-old, with 18 years as a first-team player behind him, wanted to prove he still had something to...

John Terry lifts first trophy as Aston Villa player, and it's... different

John Terry kicked off his Aston Villa career by adding yet another trophy to his already bulging collection of silverware.

The former Chelsea captain made his bow for Villa in a preseason tournament out in Germany, seeing off competition from Duisburg and Hertha Berlin to win the "Cup of Traditions".

And what a mighty cup it is too -- a small figurine clambering out of an oversized burst football in which he was presumably imprisoned, all atop a swirling plinth made from precious gold and silver...

Football clubs finding a voice their fans can relate to in social media gold rush

Southampton join the player reveal movement, Wayne Rooney hits a stunner in his Everton return and more in the Sweeper.
Transfers are being unveiled in a better fashion, Maradona receives a Russian hockey jersey and much more in The Sweeper.

Banter is positively flowing from football club social media accounts. This summer has seen a space race of clubs attempting to outdo each other with creative videos and memes. Social posts have been going viral to the point of epidemic.

Aston Villa's July 3 Twitter announcement of John Terry's signing through the medium of a WhatsApp conversation between club owner Dr. Tony Xia, manager Steve Bruce and a host of current and former players was retweeted almost 21,000 times and liked almost 29,000...

Aston Villa fan gets John Terry's name tattooed on his backside

Aston Villa season ticket holder Guy Higgins was so certain that John Terry wouldn't sign for his beloved club that he made an outlandish wager on Twitter.

Indeed, Higgins vowed to get the ex-Chelsea captain's name tattooed on his buttocks should he put pen to paper at Villa Park.

Lo and behold, Terry agreed a one-year contract with Villa on Monday morning and by Monday afternoon, Higgins had held up his half of the deal -- posting the proof on Twitter for all to see.

Villa announce the signing of John Terry using a WhatsApp-style tweet

Steve Nicol suggests Steve Bruce was a key factor in John Terry joining Championship side Aston Villa.

As unlikely as it may seem, John Terry has dropped down a division and signed for Aston Villa on a one-year contract.

The Championship side produced a clever little video to announce their big-name signing via the medium of a WhatsApp group chat between the players, manager Steve Bruce and the club chairman, Dr Tony Xia.

Some fans and social media naysayers have already derided the snippet as childish, but surely there's nothing wrong with Villa's PR department having a little bit of harmless fun?
