Plateau United reassert themselves atop the Nigeria Premier League table

Stephen Odey, in purple, was joined by Plateau United's Reuben Bala in the Nigeria Premier League's hat trick club.

After just one matchday of staring up at MFM FC, Plateau United returned to the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League table in emphatic style this week, handing ABS FC their heaviest defeat in a 4-1 thrashing.

MFM, who had dislodged Plateau from top spot following a 2-1 home victory over the then-league leaders, put up a horrendously poor performance as they went down 1-0 to Gombe United. The only surprise in that game was that MFM only lost by a single goal.

Here are five takeaways from...

Nigeria youngsters prove their worth in draw with Senegal as Rohr snubs Musa

Gernot Rohr did not give Ahmed Musa the captain's armband for Nigeria's tight 1-1 draw with Senegal on Thursday.

On Thursday night, Nigeria's Super Eagles played out a 1-1 draw with Senegal's Teranga Lions in London. Gernot Rohr's team were without three of their most experienced members -- captain John Obi Mikel and strikers Odion Ighalo and Brown Ideye -- but they still contrived to show heart and pull off what was a more than commendable result against arguably Africa's best team.

Here are four takeaways from the game.

Five things to watch for as Nigeria takes on Senegal, Burkina Faso

At 24, Ahmed Musa is the elder statesman of Nigeria's attack.

International football is back and Nigeria's Super Eagles face two friendly games against a pair of highly regarded African sides. Talent-stocked Senegal were runaway favourites at the African Nations Cup and, bar an unlucky penalty shootout loss to Cameroon, could well have been the champions of Africa.

Burkina Faso were just as unlucky to lose the semifinal to Egypt.

This excellent selection of opposition is in preparation for the African Nations Cup and World Cup qualifiers and there are expectations...

Stephen Odey hits double figures as MFM defeat NPFL leaders Plateau 2-1

Another thrilling week of NPFL action is in the books, with Enyimba captain Mfon Udoh striking in a 1-1 draw against ABS.

League leaders Plateau United against third-placed MFM FC was the highlight of a superb weekend of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matches and there were milestones aplenty on the day, as Nigeria football federation president Amaju Pinnick -- who was just elected to the CAF executive committee, becoming only the third Nigerian to be so elevated -- was at the grounds. Accompanying him were his two vice presidents, one of whom is chairman of the league organising body, and a posse of other...

Ahmad's victory over Hayatou will give Nigerian football a bigger voice

Issa Hayatou and Sepp Blatter
Issa Hayatou was a close ally of former FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

On Thursday in Ethiopia, little known Madagascan Ahmad Ahmad defeated incumbent Issa Hayatou in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) elections to end the Cameroonian's 29-year stranglehold on African football.

Two men who publicly put their necks on the line to secure that victory for the 57-year-old Ahmad were Zimbabwean Phillip Chiyangwa and Nigerian Amaju Pinnick.

Pinnick faced opposition from Nigeria's sports minister Solomon Dalung, from Nigerian members of CAF committees,...

El Kanemi reach home field milestone, Ubong Friday continues Akwa's revival

Plateau United vs. Kano Pillars in Nigerian Premier League
Plateau United kept their perch atop the Nigerian Premier League with an impressive 2-0 win over traditional power Kano Pillars.

ESPN FC correspondent Colin Udoh recaps the week that was in the Nigerian Premier League.

El Kanemi win 20th straight at home

For nearly 12 years, Kano Pillars proved invincible at their home ground, turning the edifice into a fortress where losing was unthinkable.

That record is unlikely to be matched any time soon, but this weekend, El Kanemi Warriors achieved a milestone that should leave even Pillars envious: they recorded their 20th consecutive win on home soil when they beat Niger Tornadoes...
